Three in one fell swoop

For SDV Projects GmbH, Hamburg, we had to transport a round 60 tons of heavy drums, 19 metres long and with a circumference of 4 metres, as well as components of 5.21 metres wide from Kromberg, Slovenia via Spielfeld, Suben and Venlo to Antwerp, Belgium. At the same time we received an assignment from CONTI-Trans Speditionsges. m. b. H., Frechen in Germany to transport a Lube-Oil-System with the measurements 12.8 x 4.85 x 3.95 m and with a total weight of 42.5 tons from Ptuj in Slovenia also to Antwerp.
Both cargos gave our experienced team the problem that on the basis of the height of the haulage, motorways couldn’t be used everywhere. Minor roads and built-up areas amongst other things including roundabouts represented considerable obstacles and necessitated not only particular attention in planning and implementation but also in parts the need for structural alterations.
In order to simplify the process, we decided to merge the two cargos from our two customers at the Austrian border crossing at Spielfeld, and thus organize tunnel blocking, transport chaperonage and construction site clearance in Austria, Germany, Holland and Belgium together and hence at an advantageous price.
Before the start however, we had to increase the loading area of two of the three vehicles to 4.5 and 9 metres respectively by means of the construction of extension links.
Also, the loading of the vehicles normally represents not insignificant time expenditure. But in the case of the barrel haulage, the whole transport was ready to go within 2 hours due to the excellant cooperation between the two crane drivers, the 3 internal attendants, the lorry drivers as well as the loading staff at the loading area. The three cargos were transported in only 7 days from Slovenia, via Austria, Germany and Holland to Antwerp.
Alongside a total of 9 individual escort vehicles, help was given in each country by local escorts with local knowledge were essential with manoevres such as the necessary by-pass of the ‘Plabutsch’ tunnel through the Grazer urban area, the deconstruction of signs and crash barriers and other such factors with which we were concerned.
