Taking a 7.30 metre wide load through Vienna

If a company claims that no load is too long, too heavy, too wide or too high for it, it has to prove it on a daily basis.

The transport contracts that we have had to deal with in the last few months have presented a particular challenge to us. An approximately 50-tonne stator had to be transported from Slovakia via Vienna into Styria for the VA-Tech Hydro GmbH in Weiz, situated 30 km east of the Styrian regional capital Graz. An exercise where our specialists use their comprehensive know-how and were able to prove their commitment.

The 7.30 meter wide installation had to be guided and transported from the production site in Tlmace in Slovakia via the crossing point Berg near Bratislava on dual carriageways, the urban motorway in Vienna (where in principle only loads of up to 6.50 metres are possible!), the Südautobahn and finally via narrow main roads to its destination.

It took only a week for the advanced notice for the police escort in Slovakia, the organisation of the motorway and road maintenance areas, the gangs of workers for dismounting and the subsequent re-erection of numerous traffic signs and other installations in Slovakia and Austria. In the course of that it required a lot of persuasive power with the authorities as well as acquiring the legal authorisation.

With four of Sondertransporte GmbH’s own escort vehicles, with a police escort in Slovakia and with the assistance of the Austrian executive the steel colossus was taken to its destination on the prescribed route in a spectacular night transport. Because of the size of the load there was only one place on the outskirts of Vienna suitable for a stopover.

Our highly motivated team handled this transport four times in all, to the complete satisfaction of our client, in the process of which on the last occasion the Vienna-Graz motorway had to be temporarily completely closed between Seebenstein and Grimmenstein because of road works. Particular expertise was needed by the driver who finally had to guide the 7.30 metres wide load on his 4-axle low loader semi-trailer in “precision work” through a shed entrance only 7.34 metres wide at its destination.
